The miners starting from the bottom
« on: May 03, 2021, 12:54:05 pm »
A bank holiday surprise was sprung all the way from Ukraine with the caretaker appointment of Ajax boss Skittles as interim head coach at Shaktar Donetsk. The wealthy club owners said to be impressed with the ground up work at Ajax (and less aware of the progress of Juventus in CoE) but have brought in their man to spearhead their attempts at the Umbro division title.

Skittles was tight lipped on the style and formation the miners would be adopting, but made it clear the days of the team being a Brazilian retirement home wee in the past and that he hoped to leave the side in better shape than it stands and a tier higher.

What a few weeks it has been in Ukraine, the Shaktar training ground has had a revolving door fitted with 9 players already departed. Skittles making good his intention to transform Donetsk from a last hurrah paycheck, to a serious Eastern European EFLO power. The replacements have been far more stellar, Mbappe and Tijani coming in on loan from PSG and the scouts unearthing midfield gems in Ukrainian Yaroslavsky and Austrian  Schopf, the former being made club captain and given the number 10 shirt.

The auction went well too with Czech box to box midfielder Sevick being secured and young Ukraine centre half Krom being snapped up. Impressively this has all come at a net cost of just £200m, but with the third round of the auction still to go, and rumours of the scouts having been sent out like football dementors from Azakaban the odds of Donetsk being promoted are getting ever shorter.

The Pre season campaign has gone well for Shaktar, the plethora of new signings have gelled really well and the 9 new players all looking like they are the real deal. The Subutteo cup campaign started with a 1-1 draw with Adidas favourites PSG and then an impressive 2-1 victory over Real Madrid, the bubble took a bit of a pop with a 3-1 defeat to Levadia Tallinn and a 2-0 defeat by RB Leipzig, but they bounced back with a 1-0 win over Ajax, and then a 1-0 defeat to Roma.

All told this represented a good campaign, and a far cry from what anyone would have expected a few weeks ago, Shaktar look well placed to most pundits and managers to be looking for promotion top from the Umbro league.

So after what has been a disappointing campaign Shaktar have confirmed that Skittles won’t be extending his one season caretaker contract at the club. Despite transforming the player pool at the club and getting in talent for the now and future, results haven’t been what the club had hoped and the expected promotion challenge never emerged.

The decision was taken earlier in the season, but the club delayed the announcement until after the transfer window had closed. Skittles said he enjoyed the challenge of Shaktar and was proud to have made them a genuine club with a good Ukrainian player base and would look forward to next season and another caretaker role challenge.

After back to back promotions and securing the Adidas league title Skittles confirmed he would be stepping aside at Shakhtar Donetsk. Having built a formidable attacking side, he confirmed he wouldn’t manage two sides in the Elite division and Ajax was his first love and home.

Whoever gets them has a wonderful squad filled with high quality experienced players and a good batch of promising youngsters.

Skittles confirmed he had signed a pre contract agreement to caretake another side and was looking forward to the challenge of managing another of the clubs he’s long held affection for.
