Season 2 and life in the elite division beckons. After an undefeated campaign and convincing league title, and  a league trophy semi final, this year the Ajax fans are in jubilant expectant moods. Their young squad are extremely well placed for the long term, but the challenge will be for them to start mixing it with the big clubs from the off and to challenge on three fronts.

With 4 of the lesser players set to move on, there are still 9 teenage players on the books, and there was a massive statement of intent as a deal worth £280m for midfield marshall Tygo Baart was rejected, skittles stating he wanted to be the best team in the league, and not sell their best players to other sides.

The Cryuff arena is expected to be ready to hold 60,000 fans by the time the league campaign starts, Skittles announced his first signing, the highly rated FC Porto versatile frontman M_Marega signing with striker S_Hansen going the other way. Skittles felt Marega being able to play across the pitch at the top was worth letting the highly rated Hansen go, the form of Traore in the development league last year giving confidence of his abilities to cover as an out and out number 9.

There are more players being targeted on the transfer front, but was giving little away other than he knew the type of players he was looking for and was making use of his knowledge of all of the European clubs as he aimed to compliment the players he already had rather than gazump the main squad.

Season two...... the treble beckons for those wanting to become legends

So as the mid season break is upon us, Skittles declared Ajax were not looking not make any signings and there maybe some players going out on loan to get game time. Sitting in 3rd, and a point off top is a good return after a difficult start to the season, qualification to the knockout stages of the WCT show Ajax are not out of place having been promoted. With the top ranked defender in the development league making a name for himself, the mid season break is going to see Ajax train their young stars further and otherwise very little disruption.

So the end of the season ended up being a disappointment to most Ajax fans, the club finished in the bottom half of the table, and the semi finals of the world club trophy was the main highlight of the campaign. Lacazette and Aubameyang were sold to make way for Mitchell and Florin, and although both have plenty of career in front of them there was a notable drop in results. But having made the end of the season and retaining elite league status. Season 3 beckons. The return of K_Pierie and C_Eiting from excellent development league campaigns sees them take first cover at central defence and anchorman respectively. The latter meaning Harry Winks gets a move into the sunshine with Olympiakos. There are a trio of 18 year olds heading to the development league this season which they are expected to shine in.

The emergence of S_V_Der_Sloot as a world class centre half sees him take the captains arm band at just 17 years old. The money can’t buy man set to lead for years to come, and Lucas Moura taking VC to ensure leadership at both ends of the park.

The focus in pre season has very much been passing, passing, passing as Ajax continue their goal of total football, and the expectation that anyone pulling o; the jersey is comfortable on the ball with both feet in any part of the pitch. The clubs scouting network was working hard in the off season, and A_Ahmedov a out and out number 9 was unearthed playing in South Africa, the 25 year old Bulgarian coming in for a £111m has seen him given the nickname Nelson by his team mates.

So the pre season auction went brilliantly to plan, with Ajax picking up their first pick senior and top rated striker available in B_Raman, who has been given the number 11 shirt to play inside left on the infamous front 3. Ajax also picked up their first choice youth in Larouci, the young Frenchman was by far the best passing rated defender in the entire auction, so it was no surprise Skittles went for him. The purchases are going to allow AJax to send two more teenagers off to the development league. The Ajax love has even tempted Skittles into purchasing and old school Ajax jersey in real life!

Well it’s been a disappointing Subutteo cup campaign, a 2-1 victory over Man City appeared great at the time, but successive goal scoring blanks against lower league opponents in the defeat by Red Star Belgrade, the draw against Marseille, defeat to Rangers and even a defeat against Shaktar proved too much, and for the first time in 2 seasons Ajax changed formation for the last ore season game against Helsingin. This finally ended the goal-less and winless 4 game run. But that also proved to be a change point for personnel, and the misfiring group of strikers were broken up, Mitchell the first to leave with winger Junazaj coming back in the other direction. Also auction pick Raman was sold to Wolfsburg for 155m, a 37m hit, but deemed necessary. With 4th pick full back Peters up for sale and the club scouts back on the road it will be a very different Ajax lining up when the season kicks off this coming weekend. Priorities are being in the top half of the elite division and also the League Cup.

Season 3 half term report

Well Ajax will certainly consider themselves slightly ahead from where we thought we would be at the start of the season. But there’s a sense of what could have been. We sit 5th in the league as the best of the rest behind the top 4 and are in the quarter finals of both cups, and Centre Forward Ahmedov is joint top scorer in the league with 27 goals. Made all the more amazing when the previous season long record for us stood at 16!

The other 2 scout signings of Valencia and Tutal have settled into the squad well and in the development league the future looks rosy with all 5 teenagers showing real promise and progress. With only 5 of the 26 senior players over 25 years old and only 1 over 28 and 17 players 21 or under the side very much has its best years to come, and there have been some breathtaking performances where we’ve had 20-30 attempts on goal.

The introduction of a new system after successive defeats has been a huge plus and it’s only the second time in our history we’ve set up differently for kick off.

The next steps are to try and become a little more ruthless, there are some games where we lack the guile to get results when we are not dominating and the younger players perhaps lack that big game experience to change their fortunes when the chips are down. We may look to vary tactics/formation a little more and have faith that the players can adapt. But it’s will always be a passing/pressing/attacking team.

The clubs finances are improving week on week and the Cryuff arena is only a few weeks away from holding 75,000 fans. Ajax have been the young up and comers for 20 years now, but the infrastructure at the club means this time we won’t be selling!

The aim in the rest of the season is to fight for silverware in the knockout competitions and to retain a high mid table league position.

With season 3 heading towards its conclusion Ajax announced that Skittles has signed a fresh 3 year deal at the club to extend the 3 year stay already behind them both. The club said that they had been delighted at the way old fashioned Ajax principles had been implemented at the club, and that it would now be several years before the club would be required to either buy or sell any player from a point of view of necessity. Skittles said he looked forward to overseeing the development of such a big pool of young talented players, and that the clubs focus moving forward would be to find the best young Dutch talent out there and to begin adding to the clubs trophy cabinet!

End of season 3 review

So I’d say season 3 was concluding at level par from the starting expectations, finishing 8th in the league may be a slight disappointment to some, a run of 3 draws at the end costing us the chance to finish a little higher. Although looking at the quality of the squads in front of us there’s no automatic claim to have finished higher. Our cup credentials held up really well. The semi finals of the EFLO cup and the quarter finals of the League Cup saw us succumb to Liverpool and Spurs respectively. We’ve shown ourselves to be adaptable to changes in formation and tactics and we got some good results when we’ve set up for specific sides. Successive draws against Spurs and Liverpool showed we can play with much more discipline than we ever used to.

In terms of individual players A_Ahmedov bagged 35 goals in his maiden EFLO season, although his scoring rate slowed significantly in the second half of the season, Lucas_Moura showed he was an excellent foil and returned a personal record of 18 goals for the season. The midifeld unit showed their creative prowess, Evan_Tutal, T_Baart and J_Jaggernath returning 9, 8 and 7 assists respectively. Question marks may sit against J_Valencia though, 36 matches with no assist and a solitary goal is not the kind of returns expected of a 31 rated winger.

In defence 17 year old centre half and skipper S_V_Der_Sloot has made a massive difference, 8 clean sheets in the league this season a great return and A_Onana developing into a keeper on merit with the other top goalies.

The club structure continues to develop well, the Johan Cryuff arena is now holding 75,000 fans and the clubs finances have been nurtured up to 70m from 20m early in the season. We’ve had 5 teenagers off in the development league. French defensive duo Lacroix and Larouci have done really well, versatile centre mid Gravenberch contributing at both ends of the pitch. Centre forward Traore returns as the top rated striker and Marega also in a position to challenge for first team credentials.

Next season continues to show promise for the future, with 8 teenagers starting the season rated 28+ and another 9 players 20-21 years old the feeling that Ajax will have their day is quietly growing, but the fans will be hoping that there is some form of silver wear to come in season 4.

SEASON 4!

Well there’s nothing like a close season for freshening up the squad and getting stuck into club development. There’s been some brutal sales, astute purchases, targeted training and development and some great fortune in the NY giveaway, but let’s take a look. As with previous seasons we’ve looked to do all our work early into pre season so the squad has the best chance of settling and knitting together before week one proper.

DEPARTURES

Standing still gets you nowhere and there were fast departures, young quartet Schuurs, Januzaj, Florin and Van Der Beek were assessed as not having the potential to ever break into the first team and so were sold at a combined price of £330m. There have also been a series of loan departures, Ajax will be sending 7 players out for the season to other sides or the development league, all of whom are currently 28-29 rated and 18-20 years old. So there will be plenty of browsing at match reports to see how Scherpen, Larouci, Lacroix, Gravenberch, Rasmussen, Krutogolov and Marega are fairing. Rasmussen is new to the game, having been signed as the clubs free scout player. The 18 year old Dane can play centrally or on the right and looks the genuine prospect. Young French defenders Lacroix and Larouci will be looking for game time and Gravenberch will want to develop that on pitch presence to rival his club mentor T Baart.

SIGNINGS

As soon as the free market list was published Ajax swooped for Rothammer, the 20 year old can play across the midfield and made his £130m signature a complete no brainer. The auction saw us trounced by Marseille for pick one, but in 19 year old right back Van D Brempt we have a wonderful understudy to Timber. With one free academy scout player already signed the scouts are back out in the field looking for one more prospect for the future. In contrast to previous seasons we’ve made a series of loan signings to provide additional matchday cover, but also there’s some great experience being shared to younger players. T Muller is fine example of this and a couple more loan signings are expected before the pre season is out.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Where the openings for player development have arisen it’s all been about upping stats for the starting 11, and developing the greatest centre half the game will ever see. At 17 years old club captain S V Der Sloot is now 35 rated and becoming the envy of other managers across the EFLO landscape. But equally the rest of the squad have levelled up nicely and the staring 11 is 31 rated. But in true Ajax fashion it’s the players ages that dazzles, the average age across the squad is just 21 years old and with 9 teenagers and an incoming 10th on the books it’s a very bright future. On the up side there’s also the best part of 350m in the bank so unlike previous Ajax sides there won’t be the need to sell the prospects to “bigger” sides.

SEASON 4 AIMS

Last year was very much inconsistent, some amazing victories and some puzzling defeats, but in the second half of the season we showed we could be tactically adaptable and grind out results as well as turning in amazing perfromances. This year we will aiming to break into the top four in the league, and with 3 cups in the schedule we would love to bring some silver wear back for the fans!

Season 5

Well season 4 was very much a disappointment, our plans to challenge the top tier of sides was in disarray and by the halfway stage we were at the bottom of the table. So the Ajax board convened an EGM, the future of the manager was not up for discussion, but the direction of the club was. An ambitious plan was agreed, for Ajax to once again become the hub of Dutch football, and for an all Dutch first team squad. We got to within a handful of players of achieving this, but managers were reluctant to sell first team players into the season and with the transfer window closure looming. By the end of the season we managed to win the playoffs to retain our Elite division spot, and were runners up in the ELFO cup, the close season has seen a mass of activity!

Stadium

The Johan Cryuff Arena has now been fully modernised and expanded to 100,000 seats and has been a long term project full of challenges and occasionally forgetful builders, but this finally becomes a cornerstone of the clubs standing.

Transfers

This window was always going to be a challenge, every last squad sheet was scanned and every Dutch player in the game identified and their credentials written down in the little black book, as the culmination of last seasons plans was ahead of us. The offers for captain Sloot rained and poured in via email and WhatsApp, all them instantly rejected, he was going no where!

A range of deals were set up and put out, this saw Estonian full back Krutogolov and £50m got to Salzburg for full back Geertruida, 18 year old French centre half Lacroix head to Spain for right back Fon’-Mensah, highly rated 18 year old Rasmussen left for Spurs with winger Bergwijn coming back, utility striker Marega heading to Bayern for poacher Zirkzee and them the two longest negotiated transfers in EFLO history saw Van_Gogh come from Schalke for Elhamed and 60m, and the final peiece of the orange jigsaw was a keeper. With only 2 options, we battered, begged and inundated Rangers with offers for Cleef, and eventually Onana and young young full back Larouci were enough. The sale of Tadic to PSG for 220m meant it was mission completed, job done. Shop shut!!

But then……

In the far off land of Mordor under the shadows the dark lord Raingod was waiting, his malice poured into his negotiating team, one offer to rule them all…… his mind was bent on Sloot, he was seeking it and putting forth all his might to obtain him, offer after offer missed it’s mark, and the Ajax board resisted, but then a secret weapon was unveiled.
Ajax had already captured the highly rated midfielder Merlin_Vormir in the player draft, and Raingod asked a shadowy figure to dismount form his black horse, unfurled a mass of dark robes to reveal Merlins brother Jareth!! The prophecy at Ajax is well known to all, two young brothers one a defender, the other a midfielder, took the club to new heights with a dazzling team of Dutch players around them, and it was long ago written that this day would come to pass again!

The board was set, the pieces in place and the stars aligned, so we sold Sloot and also got Virgil Van Dijk back in the deal BOOM.

When the deal was announced there were many unhappy voices in the Ajax supporters and Dutch press, but Skittles pointed out an overlooked statistic which was Sloot missed 20% of Ajax’s matches last season due to injury and suspension and whilst there was no doubt around his talents, at 17 to already be missing such a high percentage of matches indicated there were legitimate concerns on fitness and temperament.

A second flurry of transfer activity saw veteran midfield battler Strootman arrive for £120m, 17 year old centre half Ajol_Sammer arrive from the scouting network and Kerkhof/Teze being sold as surplus to requirements.

Pre season

Training has all been about passing/shooting as we look to bring the players secondary skills up evenly across the pitch, last seasons 4-4-1-1 system which brought so much stability is likely to remain the base of what we do but with tweaks in positions and tactics expected. Latre_Huupers who finished joint top scorer in the development league last season is expected to lead the front line, and new captain Evan_Tutal at number ten pulling all the creative strings.

Our aim is to retain the Elite league status and again push for silverware through the cup competitions, with a return the World Club Trophy on the cards as well.

“Don’t worry, about a thing, cause every little thing, is gonna be alright……”
